Astronomy for Kids
The Playful Planets series is a collection of
space books for kids that introduces young readers to the
planets of the solar system through storytelling, mythology, and colourful
characters. Designed especially for curious young readers, the books combine fun, imagination,
and learning about the planets and space.
There are three books in the Playful Planets
children's book series.
In the first book, The Playful Planets Say Hello and Watch the Rocket,
the planets introduce themselves and watch a rocket ship from Earth fly through space,
wondering which planet it might land on.
"They say they reach for the stars, but they only ever seem to get this far!"
moans Marvin, the miserable Man in the Moon.
"All the rubbish they leave after every trip, I'm starting to feel like the local tip!"
The second book, The Playful Planets and the Days of the Week,
helps children learn the days of the week while discovering the names of the
planets of our solar system. In many languages - especially those derived
from Latin - the days of the week are named after the planets.
For this reason, some Spanish and French day names also appear in the story.
The third book, The Playful Planets Behaving Badly,
brings the planets of our solar system together in a lively adventure inspired by mythology.
Mickey Mercury, the mischievous messenger, attempts to deliver some bad news to
Mr Bully Mars, who takes exception and blames Mercury for putting him in a bad mood.
"Don't shoot the messenger," responds Mickey.
"I like to deliver the news. It's not my fault you've got a short fuse..."
Children are naturally fascinated by space, the planets, and the solar system.
